Using magnesium for period cramps is something I wish I did before.

Period pain is common and dreaded every month by many women. What we aren’t told though, is that many simple things can help.

For example, taking magnesium! It has helped me so much and I’m here to tell you all about it in this blog post!

A few years back, my gynecologist recommended magnesium to treat my menstrual cramps. She knew that the pill was a no for me lol.

Since it’s natural, I was ok to try magnesium supplements. And you know what? Only after one month, I noticed the difference.

So I needed to dig into this to understand why and how.

Magnesium for period cramps : how does it work so well?

Magnesium is already known to be essential for our health. It helps with fatigue, anxiety, and migraines.

Now, taking magnesium for periods has become a new thing, and you’ll soon understand why.

Researches found that magnesium has a positive effect on :

  • PMS (1)
  • Period pain (2)
  • PMS and period migraines (3)

Researchers explain this by the fact that magnesium helps to smooth muscles (4). Knowing that period pain comes from uterine contractions, it’s pretty accurate.

Moreover, a deficit in magnesium favors prostaglandin production. This is a hormone that can cause inflammation and, thus, period pain (5).

Eat your magnesium

The good news is, magnesium can be found in delicious foods :

  • dark chocolate,
  • nuts (almonds and cashew)
  • pumpkin seeds
  • spinach
  • black beans
  • avocado

This is the perfect excuse to go and make yourself guacamole or healthy chocolate mousse.

For optimal absorption, it’s recommended to associate it with vitamin B6 (in chickpeas, sweet potatoes, bananas, tuna, or chicken).

How to choose your magnesium supplement

Some days, getting your magnesium through your diet isn’t enough. That’s why supplements are here to save us!

But, keep in mind that it’s always best to talk to your doctor before taking any supplement.

Magnesium glycinate is the most recommended one because it’s easier to digest.

I get my supplements and superfoods on iHerb.com. Not only prices are affordable, they have a ton of products to choose from. Use the code CBY2374 at checkout to get money off of your orders!
